Bathroom Fitting

Shower screen leaking

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

We had a Coram sliding over-bath shower screen (very expensive @ £225) fitted last year and have recently discovered it has been leaking onto Chipboard flooring under the bath. We did not notice until the damp smell appeared, as there was no sign of a leak in the bathroom or in the garage beneath it. The screen was supplied by us (PlumbWorld) and fitted 'professionally' by a local plumber. Water from the shower is getting into the metal water channel and escaping somehow. Is this fixable by re-sealing the existing screen, or do we need a new shower screen? Are these types of sliding screens known to leak (the screen is heavy and is pushed/pulled a lot when extending the screen before/after each use)? https://www.plumbworld.co.uk/coram-frameless-sliding-shower-18522-18825

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, You need to take the screen off, including the wall channel, and check that the silicon sealant that the plumber put on went under the wall channel.. Sometimes plumbers put the screen in before they seal the bath and therefore they only seal up to the screen. Check that that has been sealed, if not remove all the old sealant around the bath and reseal the whole thing and let that set for 24hrs. Also when placing the wall channel back on dab a bit of silicon around the screw holes just to make sure thats water tight as well, then refit the unit remembering to seal the outside of the channel to the wall and where the screen slides into the channel.. Hope that helps

I would be more worried about the smell of damp & chipboard flooring in your bathroom tbh, should be marine ply on a bathroom floor. Probably been leaking from day 1, hence the smell of damp from the chipboard floor. Will soak it up like a sponge. Was bath, shower sealed before installation, was it recessed into wall first or just butted up & siliconed ? If floor not wet when shower, the leak is coming from elsewhere.

The bath should of been siliconed before the screen was fitted..I personally silicone bead the length of the profile and screw holes when fitting then silicone inside the bottom of the profile where it meets the bath..once screen is fitted the outside of the screen only should be siliconed this allows any water ingress into the channels to escape back into the bath area not outside the bath..

I do agree with removing all the scream and silicone because it may not be the correct silicone. Check all the way around the bath and when refitting the shower screen wall mount run a beed all the way down the wall side and inside the bottom of the wall mount band as a second seal you could run a 25mm dmold around the bath just to give it more of a seal. I can only go on past experience when following another plumber.
