Am I allowed to extend a cable and swap junction boxes

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Hi, I have a flush fitting single socket with a back-box in the wall. I would like to surface mount a double socket by securing it's back-box onto the back-box in the wall. To do this I would need to extend the cable to reach the new socket. I was thinking I could achieve this with Wago connectors and short lengths of new cable. Would this constitute a change in the circuit and contravene part P. Also I have two old round junction boxes under the floor and wanted to change them to maintenance free Wago junction boxes. Would this also constitute a change in the circuit and contravene part P. As always, many thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As long as you are comfortable doing it go for it. Just make sure you use the right size cables to extend them.

Shut down the power in the house from the main supply before you do something. Best to check it whit a small appliance before you start

Has the circuit been checked, tested? Is it earthed? Neutral checked? I wouldn’t advise anyone to have a go. Various aspects need to be checked before altering a circuit. Regardless of Wago make. Junction boxes are no longer allowed to be used under floor boards as this is classed as ‘not easily accessed’. This is stated in electrical regulations. I hope this helps.

The earlier answer is not quite correct. Screw junction boxes are no longer allowed if used where there is no access to them. In these circumstances Maintenance free junction boxes must be used and the connections must be in an enclosure
