Can a new ceiling be installed underneath artex that contains asbestos?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

We're trying to find the best, least disruptive option for replacing our artex ceilings. We've had them tested and know they contain asbestos, but want to know if we can put a false ceiling in, underneath, to cover the artex? If so, how can it be installed, without disturbing the artex? We're aware that any drilling etc can release the asbestos fibres in the atmosphere, which we want to avoid. Thanks!

All artex ceilings can be re skimmed , the artex can be primed with a plasterers stabilising solution and simply re plastered. This is by far the cheapest option, installing a false ceiling or over boarding is an option but is costly and would disturb the artex.

You can over board the ceiling with plasterboard and screwing through the board is keeping any dust above we’re your working etc .you can also skim a ceiling after PVA is applied to the Artex as long as there no scrapping the ceiling will finish smooth . Mark Crowley plastering

yes as long as you seal the artex before skimming should be fine and this would avoid extra cost of boarding then skimming.
