Laying wooden joists on concrete floor

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Renovating a bathroom and we have stripped back to the concrete floor underneath. We are putting new wooden joists down and a chipboard floor. Is it enough to just seal the concrete floor? Reading some things where people are saying you must not lay wood directly into concrete. Should we be trying to raise the joists up off the concrete sightly?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Why not try DPC then 100mm insulation with a glued tng floor on top. That will out perform any wooden floor. You could also put a sand base down to get your levels before you start.

Personally I would do a damp reading on the concrete if there is no damp you should have no concerns also it is best if you do it on the day after it's been raining if it is damp put a sufficient DPM underlay I would go with a 200 gauge make sure you run it up the walls with your skirting boards and then put your joists on top of that with your chipboard and you will be absolutely fine

You can purchase Durabella baton which is timber with a foam backing on one face . The foam side can be layed directly onto concrete depending on if the floor is level in which case it can be raised to the level height with plastic shims/packers . Just Google " Durabella battens" .
