Electrical

Electricity (lights and plugs) not working in Loft Conversion but work in rest of house

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi, I would really appreciate some advise, we have family staying with us at the moment in our spare room (which is a loft conversion). Last night as the weather is cold they turned on the small electric heater and also they plugged in some phone chargers and it cut the electricity off from the full house. One switch was down in the electricity box so i put this back up, all the electricity came back except for the lights and plugs on the third floor in the loft conversion...even the light outside the bedroom door isnt working...all switches are up in the box. I am guessing the loft conversion is wired off the 2nd floor circuit (which is working) and thats why the switch isnt tripping? Also should there be second box exclusively for the 3rd floor where maybe the fuse is just gone and I need to replace? Really appreciate any advise, thanks very much!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Difficult to assess all this remotely. Best advice I can give is call a registered electrician in to find out what has gone on, then he would advise further.

As it’s going to be an addition to the second floor circuit there maybe a fused spur feeding the loft conversion as both lights and sockets are not working and should be on separate circuits my guess is it’s fed off a socket via a fused spur somewhere on the first floor socket circuit! Check all sockets upstairs ( first floor ) for a fused spur and test the fuse

I agree with advice above for a electrician to investigate. There are many possible reasons behind the fault you are experiencing.

If the loft conversion is wired off from the 2nd floor wiring as you have guessed, there should be an additional outlet controlling power to lighting & sockets for example an consumer unit or a fused connection unit, but its difficult to assess remotely. You should have received an electrical certificate for the electrical works undertaken, I would strongly recommend asking for a reputable electrician registered with either NAPIT or NICEIC to investigate this fault.
