Building underneath an elevated driveway...is this a crazy idea?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Afternoon Our driveway (approximately 30ft by 20ft) is at road level which is approximately 8ft above the entrance to our house. This feels like unused space so what I am wondering is whether it's feasible to hollow out some of the space underneath for the use as another room (gym / office) whilst maintaining the parking and what kind of ball park costs I could be looking at to achieve it? I know from Google street view that only about a 3rd of the area was parking before with the rest being a mixture of bushes, shrubs etc. and was converted to its current state a couple of years back. I appreciate this is a bit vague but any pointers would be great. Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A goliath of a task, you would need to carry out a ground survey on what services are underneath the drive first. Once that is complete then Costs could be ascertained, without that it's hard to gauge.

You would need to seek planning with a structural engineer and local Authorities with regards to creating a basement like feature at the front of your property. This is visible but there are a few key factors. But your first protocol would be to get a structural engineer to do you some drawings (which you would need for local authorities & utility companies). Would be happy to pass details of a few Structrul engineers we work with to help you along the process ?

As above, please conduct the relevant surveys and checks before carrying out any works. Good luck with the project.

This sounds like a costly job depending on the whereabouts the costs could vary. The job itself sounds like basement which would require soil removal, build, tanking , drainage solutions , steel structured roof etc. The cost of this work wouldnt be classed as an extension but 4 times at least more per m2. A survay should be carried out to asses the services below the drive also
