Purchase my own from b and q or cheaper from fitter?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM
Having read the guide I'm now wondering whether I should purchase my laminate and underlay myself or purchase the flooring via the carpenter at a trade, hopefully cheaper price?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Cheap laminates usually are poor quality and do not last like a professional range of laminate.

Yeah it’s cheaper but your almost guaranteed to end up with a significantly less quality product then the carpenter would had gotten and probably not much difference in price.
I also think this is a good way of saying yeah I don’t trust you to resale the goods to me at the price you bought them at or at a reasonable mark up but that’s just business and how it works putting a small mark up on materials helps cover for mistakes and under estimating and lots of other stuff his labour charge will have to be more expensive now to allow for this eg fuel, insurances, time spent measuring and quoting etc etc there a lot to factor in and I do think a lot of people have chipped on there shoulders when it comes to this and just aren’t in reality of how much things cost and that also your contractor needs to earn a living too he can’t work for peanuts.
Also if anything goes wrong with the materials it’s down to you to sort it out without impacting on time scales on the job as this will end up costing you extra as the contractor hasn’t allowed time for your mistakes.
You should let your carpenter supply the materials just specify a minimum standard of what you want if you think you can’t afford that save up a bit more.
Most trades men running a business are the same and this is a brilliant way to get our back up and just have an awkward job atmosphere very quickly.

Helo,
In my personal opinion depends on the style and also what you get for the price, so if you think about it if you buy it from a professional carpenter company you can actually have bespoke sizes plus you need to think about the cut outs so the overall cost might be more if you get everything separately.

Go to b&q and get your own trade card. Then purchase the wood on that!
