Is felt needed on the inside of a house roof

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hi we have just bought a 1930s house and there is no felt on the inside of the house roof. I have looked online and this seems to be the way they were built. There is no evidence of any leak or damp. Is it OK to just leave it if it as it is if it not causing a problem?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I gather that the roof makeup is Clay Rosamary tile, If so there would be no requirement for felt unless you were planning a re-roof, if that was the case in the future it would be good to use a Tyvek roof felt

Hi the regulations if you want to sell your house requires you to have breathable felt. However if you are not planning on selling your property for the time being I would use the life span of your roof until needed or leaks appear. Or if you have bought your surveyor should state this and take cost off house.

If the client isn't selling and has no issues with the roof then just let the roof live out its life as felt is not essential but it does give the roof a secondary protection if tiles or cement work does break down
