Plastering & Rendering

Bonding coat only used around skirting boards and paper used as filler

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

We have recently had the skirting boards replaced in two bedrooms. The old skirting boards were a mess and when these were removed, parts of the plaster came away with them - we were left with holes all the way around both rooms. The old skirting boards were slightly taller than the new skirting boards so once the new skirting boards were fitted, we were still left with substantial holes in the walls all the way around the top of the skirting boards. Our tradesperson returned in order to patch these up and we are concerned that it still looks a mess, even thought we were told it would be ready for painting. He has only used bonding coat - can we even paint on top of this or does it need to be skimmed? Furthermore, the plaster has dripped all over the skirting boards and plug sockets, and there are still some holes and areas with expandable foam visible. He also was looking around the house for things to stuff the holes with before adding the plaster. I believe he ended up using cardboard, paper and empty plaster bags. Is this acceptable? Thank you in advance for any guidance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, you really need to get the trademan to return and finish the work to a higher standard. He should really skim over the bonding with plaster or filler. He s=can sand with plaster/filler with 80/120 or 160 grit paper to get a smooth finish (if his plastering isn't to a high standard. Mist coat the newly finished plaster with diluted paint to seal and then paint as normal. He needs to remove any bonding lumps/bumps from woodwork and leave it imperfection free... I hope you hav'nt paid him for what sounds like very poor workmanship...

Definitely the cardboard are not acceptable packed in the plaster. Also the bonding plaster will need to be either skimmed or filled with a poly filler . In this incense when all the skirting boards where removed all the plastering including behind the skirting boards should be done before fixing new skirting on .

Clearly a cowboy, the space where the skirting is fixed should of been filled with a backing coat first then a topcoat ‘ skim coat ‘ which would of left a smooth finish prior to painting. A professional tradesmen would definitely not of used paper or cardboard to fill out holes , would not get this guy back. Hopefully you can find someone professional to make good your plastering.
