Painting older plaster with patches where paint won’t stick!

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

The house is 1960’s and we stripped wallpaper as we wanted to just paint walls. The condition of the walls is good (as a number of plasters advised when quoting), and we have done the following process, but there are patches on the wall where the paint won’t stick. Process we have done; 1.Strip wall paper (4 months ago) 2. Wiped walls down 3. Got all Chasing plastered & one wall fully plastered. 4. Painted all walls, painted with 50/50 water and white Matt emulsion paint - New plaster and chasing soaked up, but remaining walls with old plaster less so but still soaked up a little and some patches on old plaster would not soak, would either slide over with roller or roller would just lift paint back off. 5. 1 Week later, Painted all walls with white Matt emulsion (not mixed with water) - it then dried rough and the same patches where paint would not stick when rolled over with roller, so plaster colour still showing a little. 6. Sanded back all walls (apart from new plastered wall) with a hand sander to remove all roughness - I looked like a ghost by the end of it! 7. Wiped down walls 8. Repainted with white Matt emulsion again, where in some areas paint started to peel off in little pieces with roller and the patches where the paint was not sticking so well to plaster was still showing and not absorbing that well. When you go over these patches with a roller it just seems to pull the paint off showing the plaster again. 9. We let dry for a week and the walls did not dry rough all over, only in the odd spots this time. So sanded these spots and wiped down. 10. Painted all walls (old plaster) with white Matt emulsion again and now looking a lot better, apart from the patches where the dark areas/plaster is showing on the walls as paint not being sucked in so well still. 11. I have gone over just these patches with white emulsion again with a piñata brush (which hides patches) and then only using the roller once to blend in, which still would lift some of the paint off. Want to if that helps This weekend I am hoping to start unsung a the Dulux colour paint (Rock Salt - an off white) and hoping this will cover their patches. However, I am concerned this won’t happen as was patches not soaking Matt emulsion, so I wanted to find out if there is anything I can use of the patches? Also, why the paint is not soaking in on the old plaster in patches, like the chasing, rest of the wall and new plastered wall? Any advised would be much appreciated as the lining paper is a last resort - after so much effort and nearly there I would like to paint walls. Thanks

Wallpaper paste retained in the walls has caused this. Should have been removed with warm sugar soap solution ideally straight after stripping the previous coating. Then water rinse. Even then some paste can remain. I line walls that have been papered with lining paper then paint

It sounds like residue paste. After taking off old wallpaper the walls need a good sanding and then a coat of zinnser gardz will seal the walls for filling and painting . Treat the areas the come off with zinnser gardz then you can refill and repaint .
