Do I get a builder in or a floor fitter?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM

I've just had old Marley tiles professionally removed in the living/ dining room and this has left deep grooves in the floor. It also exposed a crack in the middle of the room. I want to sort the floor out properly as i have no intention of doing this again anytime soon. It's a 1930s house and whilst removing the tiles some of the skirting boards went with it as these had been laid on top of the tiles. These were rotten according to those that removed them. At certain places I don't think there's a sufficient gap at the bottom of the plasterwork. There are old sliding doors to the patio and in my lay opinion the door opening is too low and i have already been told that any new door fitted would be raised by a brick height. My question is who do I instruct to get this all fixed for me. I suppose the doors will need replacing first and that's easy enough. Who do I get in to seal the floor, put down a DPM and then level it? Is it just a floor fitter? Would they also be able to chip the plaster back where needed? Am I correct in saying that the plasterer would be in after the floor has been done? Thank you all.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

My advise would be always use the correct tradesman who specialises in that particular method of work. I’m a big believer in using the correct tradesman for different jobs if you want a proper job doing. You would need a window/door fitter, for the door. You would need a plasterer for your walls. And yes, a flooring specialist should be able to do your levelling, flooring, and DPM etc. I would never use somebody who thinks they can do all trades. They can not be specialists at all trades. Lee

Please contact me to further to arrange a site survey ( free of obligation or cost to yourself) . Kind regards Neil

Never get a general builder or handyman to do the job of floor preparation. Use a professional flooring specialist as this is what we solely do. We don’t go around plastering on Tuesdays and painting on Thursdays....

No builder self levels a floor like a floor layer will , we carry moisture metres to check levels of moisture to see if needs a liquid dpm , been to untold jobs where the builder has laid smoothing compound and on closer inspection its hollow where no primer has been applied or to much water added ..dont take that chance, as more costly in long run

Hi, get a professional for each of the trades.....we all know `Jacks` reputation. Good window company, good plasterer & top notch floorlayer, you`ll regret it otherwise. Hope this helps, Chris.
