Ask a questionBricklaying & Repointing
Air bricks, do I need a bricklayer or someone that deals with damp proofing.
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM
I've recently been advised we would benefit from an air brick in our pantry of our kitchen in our 1920's house. To help with ventilation causing a black mark presumably damp on the inside of our exterior wall. Do I need to find a bricklayer or someone that deals with damp proofing. Thanks in advance. Thanks everyone. Sorted out.

As an advanced craft brickie and a damp specialist I would advice the following.
Where black mould damp occurs normally corners of. Rooms behind wardrobes cupboards etc this happens due to lack of ventilation airflow.
Being s 1920s house will be 9inch solid wall no cavity.
One air brick towards the bottom of the wall may not solve the problems indered could add to the problem. Air bricks towards the top and bottom of the wall pantry to provide a circular air flow(warm air rises cold air sinks) and even a vent installed into pantry door may be needed.
However do not dicount water penetratipn from the outside in caused.by leaking gutter onto exterior brickwork rising damp or brickwork needs repointing hope this helps Tez handy man services

A qualified builder/bricklayer can sort this out. Also any damp proofing company. Certainly not a “handy man” Hope this helps.

Nothing wrong with the answer handyman , but wanted to add to it , anyone competent to fit the air brick , doesn't have to be qualified bricklayer, anyone who is competent at d.i.y should be fine
