Smell from sink
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM
Recently I've noticed that when my washing machine fills up with water there is an awful smell that comes from my sink. There also seems to be a puff of air when the machine starts. Do you have any idea what the problem is and what I can do to fix it?

Hi Tracy. Sure, the problem is simple. The gray washing machine outlet is likely attached to your sink waste in some way... on a spigot for example. This gray pipe should be set high and not allowed to flop downward. Every time you pour water down the sink it will take the easy route in this case some down the drain and some into your washing machine. Thus the smell from the sink and dirty water in the machine. Ask a plumber to re fix the grey pipe and also make sure your sink waste pipe is running clearly and not slightly blocked. Thanks for your MyBuilder question, hope this helps. Bob.

Hi Tracey it's always best to have separate wastes ie. 1 for the sink 1 for the washing machine. When your machine is discharging water it is drawing water from your trap and hence the smell/ gases are released up through your sink waste. If they are done individually this cannot happen
Hope this helps.
