Can I reduce the size of my Chimney breast in the ground floor lounge?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi, Is it possible to reduce the width of the chimney breast in the centre of our lounge wall? We want to open this wall leaving a slimmer chimney breast housing a log burner, so that the lounge becomes open plan into the dining room. But not sure if its possible to slim down the chimney breast leaving enough space to walk around it. Would we have to knock it all down, put RSJ in to support the first floor stack and just rebuild the chimney breast downstairs to the width we want? Any suggestions welcome!! Thank you Lauren

yes it is possible to reduce the chimney breast but there are various ways of doing it. It may be possible to rebuild it as it but smaller but there are a lot of factors to consider.

Yes taking down the old chimney breast and rebuilding it will work. You just need to make sure the jambs either side are wide enough to support the weight above after completing the rebuild. 200mm Jamb width minimum each side of the breast

Yes but would require steel beams to hold remainder of existing breast.
