Bitumous paint along boot on of house.
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM
Hi. After chipping all the old render away, back to the brickwork, I had a coating applied. The contractor could only apply the new coating above the damp course to comply with regulations but this leaves an unsightly, patchy brick/cement gap between the ground and coating. It was suggested that this could be painted with black bitumous paint. My question is, would this affect the damp course allowing dampness to creep up the wall? Thank you.

This will get with damp ,
Because once it painted it’s seals the wall and everything around that area .

Bitumous paint is impervious to damp and so will not allow damp to creep up the wall - however, i would be concerned at the point at which the new coating and the bitumous paint meet - without knowing what the new coating is its difficult to advise fully - Without a drip at the damp course level any water running down the outside of your wall may be obstructed by the relatively thick (0.1mm) bitumous paint edge at your damp course and could then become problematic.

The best option is black masonry paint (or even black emulsion )this will allow the bricks to dry out as masonry paint is porous and will not bridge the damp proof course ,and if painted in black will give a nice line to the house
It's also very easy to touch up
