Yes that will be fine, you will need to install a lintel above the doorway to support the opening. You may be best to seek out advice to find out if the wall is load bearing. You will most likely be best to use props that will need to be used to support the wall above whilst making the opening.

Hi No you will not need planning permission,you will need to support the upper masonry by using a strong boy and acrow prop,before installing 2 no concrete lintels,make sure the lintels are installed above the height of the door and frame before fitting You can use 2 no 150 mm x 100 mm concrete lintels at 1200 mm long as the end bearing To the lintels would be 150 mm either side of the opening or alternatively use 2 no 100 x 75 mm, the latter would suffice due to small span of the opening also a fire check door and frame is required. Also you may want building reg certification for this work which can be ascertained at a cost of £360.00 by approaching the local authority to make the inspection of the works done by your contractor.

Cutting the open does mean you will need a lintel. The new door and frame will need to be a 1hr fire door with a closer and hopefully garage floor is lower than the kitchen floor. You can always ask your local building control pay a fee and have it inspected by them, you then have no problem if at a later date you sell and it comes up on a survey.
