Removal of brick built pantry in kitchen

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi, we are wanting to remove an old brick built pantry in our kitchen. There is nothing above the left side wall of the pantry but the upstairs hallway. The right side wall extends beyond as the far kitchen wall and is beneath the staircase so we assume supports that. Would the removal of the left wall and bricks above the doorway seem problematic or straightforward? Many thanks. Elphie

This can be achieved but I would be inclined to engage in a professional survey just to ascertain exactly what the wall is supporting in terms of stairs, floor joists or support to other walls (buttress)

Hi Elphie, thanks for posting this question. As a Chartered Architect, I would strongly recommend you get in touch with a local Structural Engineer, you can find a useful database on the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors website. The SE will visit and give you sound advice. If your enquiry broadens to include Architectural questions, then I would be delighted to help, Best wishes Lee

You need to get a structural engineer to assess the walls. Don’t take any chances because if you remove it yourself and some of the structure fails, your insurance will not cover the repair.

Hello Elphie, the general advice should always be to engage with a building consultant/surveyor/engineer qualified and insured to provide competent structural advice when making any alterations to internal structures. They can assess the situation from an experienced background and determine the most pragmatic solution for you.

Hello Elphie, To reiterate the previous responses - please do engage a qualified and insured structural engineer in the first instance! A structural engineer will be able to give you calculations and steel specs and help you assess the complexity of the job. Emily
