Dot and dab over tiles before retiling - is this legit?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

We are having our bathroom re done and the workmen want to dot and dab over a wall of original tiles, put boards up and then tile on top (porcelain tiles). His reason being the old tiles are really well bonded to the wall and it will cause a lot of damage that would need construction work to rectify. Reading online keeps giving me mixed messages about this... basically saying YES you can do it but its a bit of a bodge job. I can't make up my mind if its something I should be willing to pay someone to do? As in am I paying someone to cut corners or is it a legit technique used. I have no experience with this sort of stuff (clearly).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In my opinion get the tiles off then repair walls to the standard required for tiling.

The person doing the job want an easy way out, that's his solution. The old tiles should be removed and the new one should be lay properly on the fixed wall if necessary.

we never cover old tiles always remove back to original then you can either use tileboard or replaster for correct finish and high standards the person wanting to over board looking for easy way out sounds very unprofessional to be honest .

In our opinion, the finished tile job is only as good as the tile preparation. We would recommend to remove all existing tiles and prepare/repair the fixed surface for tiling. In theory, if the boarding is adequately secured to the fixed surface and suitable for the weight of porcelain tiles, it is acceptable, but as someone has already said, an easy quick fix.

The easy and quick way is to just tile straight on top of the existing tiles. Of course that’s not always practical, but if they are suggesting boarding over it and then tiling that seems like a complete waste of money to me.

I would remove the old tiles and adhesive to a point where the surface can be retiled or replastered to a smooth even finish no need for overboarding over tile the tradesman just trying to cover it.
