Is the gas supply to fireplace still patent/working?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM
We've moved into our new house recently. There is an electric fireplace with a surround and mantle. We're keen on reinstalling a gas fireplace. The current electric fire sits inside the wall and there seems to be a flue present. There is a little black pipe coming from the floor which is probably the gas supply but I don't know if it's working or not. I tried to open the valve but can't hear anything - not sure whether this means much. Is there a way of checking whether it's still patent?

Home owners should never test to see if a suspected gas pipe is live or not. From the sounds of the location of this pipe it probably is most likely the gas pipe. It may have been capped from either there or at some other point, best to get a gas safe engineer to investigate who could at the same time also test the flue to make sure it is not blocked and so on. Thank you.

my advise would be to call a gas safe registered person as someone who isnt gas safe registered shouldnt be playing/looking/testing etc a gas pipe.
The gas safe approved person will be able to confirm if pipes are in use or not in use and can cap off as required for you and he will test them and ensure they are gas tight and safe.

To test your gas fire you need competent person such as Gas Safe Register engineer at thesame time hewill carry out several safety checks to your gas installation to make sure system is safe and sound a s well as he will check a flue for any obstructions etc.
Please bear in ming that no 👎o ne who is not qualified or competent with should not do any gas related jobs.

I will suggest you don't touch anything you don't know about. Better try to fine Local Gas engineers to investigate. In this moment most important in this case is it you don't now what pipe is coming out , Don't operate any electrical appliances and try to ventilate the room as often you can.

Builders opening and chimney should be checked by a builder and if satisfactory be able to issue a certificate to state it is sound.
For checking the pipework whether it has gas -should be left to qualified personnel to investigate and they should be Gassafe Registered.
