Switching from gas to electric heat in a mid-terraced house
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
I am thinking of buying a mid-terraced house with mains gas heating but I would like to switch over to electric heat from sustainable sources. Is this possible in a mid-terrace, if the two houses on either side are on mains gas?

Depending on the area and the direction your property faces you can go with solar panels or Air source heating. You can look this up within the area through your local council for incentives, and depending on the size of property you could go with ground source, but this is quite expensive. And without access to the rear would be rather difficult. But you can check it all out on various web sites for the ideas and ask your local council if you do what you want with in the area where you live. As you can't use solar in areas of outstanding natural beauty or conservation areas, and of course on listed properties. Always handy to check if there are any stipulations before planning anything. check this out for a start.

Remember also that unless the mid terrace is new build, your facing huge insulation challenges in terms of reducing heat loss through walls, windows, floors and roofs to ensure the electric heating works efficiently and isn’t all lost as it’s not as quick and efficient as gas.
