How to tile an area of 42 to 45 square meters
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
We would like to tile from kitchen to hallway, about 42 to 45 square metre. One tiler suggests to take out all the floor boards then do the tiling in order to prevent movement and tile cracking in the future. Is his suggestion sensible?

I would board over the floorboards with cement board or ply then tile onto that.

no need to remove floor boards unless they are rotten or beyond repair. if they are in decent condition and screwed down...leave in place. Ideally use a cement backer board such as jacoboard. boards should be glued and screwed using appropriate flexible adhesive.
As with most jobs, there are several systems and ways to do the job properly.

The way to do the job properly is to make sure the existing floor boards are all skewed down properly, prime the floor and lay an anti fracture mat on top using an S2 adhesive there are a lot of mats on the market but mapie in my opinion is the best hope this answers your question

How to make a job harder than need be. If possible overboard the floor with marine ply 18mm screwed down ever150mm or hardie backer board 8 mm
How ever if the floor level from adjoining room to the kitchen does not allow this then you may have to remove the floorboards as the thickness of overboarding and tiling could create a step or trip hazard.
