Is my shower tray installed the correct way, and, is the shower screen installed correctly
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
I’m not sure that my shower tray has been installed the right way around. We have a walk in shower with a glass screen covering half the entrance. The waste outlet is on the side of the exit so water gathers near the entrance/exit. The screen is installed on a flat surface edge on the tray, rather than the opposite side which is a decline, so the water runs along the side and out of the tray. I can share pictures if that would be helpful.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi
Im sorry to hear your not getting a good exit flow of water. Without seeing the tray its difficult to comment. However, you need to question your installer as to his/her methods. You can be shown with a spirit level that the tray is installed correctly. You can also test that a bucket of water slowly emptied into the shower runs away into the waste at the same pace as the sink with the same bucket test. This shows if there is any issue in the waste pipe. Plus, if its visible, check its at least 40mm diameter, as the narrower 32mm pipes cannot cope as well with the rate of water waste.
I hope this is of some help..

Waste should never be on the exit entrance side. Glass screen should allways be on the shower area so does waste. You can refer to shower manufacturer instructions, shower valve etc they will all confirm the same thing.
Any qualifed plumber would be able to point this design flaw form 1st fix.
Ther are many options including tray with adjustable waste placement and reinforcing joist and "making a waste box"

The glass screen should be level and perpendicular to the wall and all edges of the tray should be level, with the fall to the waste moulded into the base of the tray. The position of the waste may well have been governed by the run of the waste pipe beneath the tray and it's route to the soil pipe, hopper or gulley. Sometimes this run (which should be a gentle slope away from the tray) is difficult to achieve, especially if the tray is set directly onto floorboards (ie. no plinth) where there may be a number of obstacles such as floor joists, noggings, copper pipes, etc..
If the water is accumulating around the waste then the waste may be partially blocked or perhaps the waste pipe is not the 40mm diameter that it should be. A spirit level check around the tray and, if possible on the run of the waste pipe, should be carried out to verify a proper installation.
