Water leaves a smell, hot water only it appears
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
Hello, recently I have discovered that there is a smell, almost like a gas-like smell coming from my hot water. Cold water does not appear to have a smell, but appears only when the hot water is on. Could you please advise what is the cause of this? How could this situation be rectified? And, most importantly, is it dangerous to consume the water? Thanks all in advance

hydrogen sulphate can accumulate from bacteria where water is stored at a low temperature or be been turned off for some time.
You would have to drink a lot of hydrogen sulphate before the levels become dangerous

Hi. I'm assuming you have a hot water cylinder with a loft tank cold feed. If your boiler is heating the water okay then it may be a good idea to have someone look into the cold supply tank for foreign bodies or debris. Regard Bob.

where does your water come from
mains? a well? a lake?
if its from the latter 2 it could be the hydrogen sulphate (mildy rotten egg smell)
treating the hot water system with ordinary plain bleach will stave it of for a while
