Is a fridge/freezer allowed to be protected by an mcb only?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM
HI, I have asked an electrician to quote for an upgrade of my over 20 year old consumer unit. I have also asked for each circuit to be protected by an RCBO. The electrician suggested that the fridge freezer should actually have a dedicated circuit and be protected by an MCB only to avoid the possibility of nuisance tripping. So my question is, is this normal practice and would it comply with current reg's. Many thanks in advance, simon.

According to BS the circuit must be protected by RCD or RCBO.

No it wouldn’t conform to regs. Got to be RCD protected. This has been in the regs since 2008 surprised your electrician did this.

To confirm to 18th edition it can not be on a MCB and should be RCD protected

Subject to specific installation ie type of cable and installation method, and using a fused connection unit rather than a socket it could comply but it’s a lot of hassle. A dedicated circuit from its own RCBO just supplying freezer would be favourite
