Hairline cracks in mist coat.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi all had previous post on help on mist coat, I followed the advice to a T. Wiped bare plaster as suggested before painting with macpherson eclipse watered down by 40 percent as per tin. I have now got round to “de nibbing” with 240 fine sand paper and filling (not much required) and have noticed a few hair line cracks in the mist coat. This has worried me quite a bit as I made sure to do everything correctly this time, is it my mist coat of paint that has cracked or is it tiny cracks in the plaster? There is about 5 hair line cracks 2 each where the radiators where fitted, on two of these I can follow the crack down to the bottom bare plaster and it looks like it joins in which makes me think it is the plaster skim.. Can anyone give me some advice on how to tackle these should I try fill them then paint over? Or paint over and hope it fills them. Also should I water the next coat of eclipse was hoping to do a second coat tomorrow? EDIT 1: It is on a re skim. Can anyone recommend me a good filler? or should I use something like caulk Edit 2: de nibbed the whole two rooms with sand paper and it brought out about 3 more hairline cracks, mainly around the door frames/window sill. I have purchased some easifil 20 and plan to widen cracks with a stanly and fill today, is this the stuff I need or should I purchase a fine filler? Also how deep should I go with the knife; I don’t want to do too much damage as they are very fine. Thanks in advance.

i would recommend buying some fiber tape and cover the cracks on the wall with it. Do two coats of easy fill gypsum to cover the tape make sure to apply the second coat of gypsum after the first has completely dried sand it down with sanding paper and apply your paint

No if there is only 5 airline cracks then all u need to do is open each crack up with a Stanley knife to make the cracks wider then mix up some easy feel filler and just fill the cracks wait till hard and sand down to a smooth finish

Evening Beechy17!, Newly plastered walls do get hairline cracks from time to time, (at least from the plasterer that I use 😅) it shouldn't really be anything to worry about to be honest, I'd imagine it could have something to do with the drying process, you also said there was some cracking where the rads were fitted, so that would be the cause there. As recommend in another answer someone put to you, rake the cracks out a bit with either a Stanley blade or a scraper, dust off then fill with a reputable filler, something like tetrion or easifill. Kind regards, I hope this helps. 👍 Also, no need to water down the paint for the next coat.
