Removing a plug socket
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM
Hi, I'm looking to remove some random sockets that are in a wall. I'm happy with how to do this, the bit that concerns me is the left over wires... how do I securly and safely cut them off so that no elec is coming through them? Thanks!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will have to trace them back and isolate the cables or better still employ an electrician to do this for you. I’m all for people ‘ having a go’ at stuff but if you are happy to remove them and don’t know how to make them safe it’s one of those cases where I would not give anyone remote advice-better leaving it to a professional.

Initially you need to identify the power supply cables. Then isolate the power supply. I think you should employ a qualified professional to deal with this. I am sure you heve a good intention but mistakes are very costly and dangerous

If you want to remove some sockets you have to find out where they are powered and disconnect them at this point, then sockets and cables will be dead.
Next step is to connect existing circuit in ring if was before.

So the first thing first you should turn off circuit breaker in consumer unit. You can easily identify by connect some device (however) and turning off/on breaker until you see the device stop work. Then you can removed front plate. And disconnect cable from socket. I advice do a picture before you do that. Then just connect same colours together in connector block. So 3 connector block for one socket. And at the finnal put back blank plate.
If you are not sure with your work or you want bypassed that socket ( mean disconet from ring and reconnect in right place) i can advice to call electrician to do that. But most simple way is just put there a blank plate.
