Best water system for low mains pressure

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Hi, I've tested my water pressure at the mains and it's not great, possibly less than 2 bar. It's a four bedroom house with one main bathroom and an en-suite shower room. What water system is best in terms of good hot water pressure at the showers and also cost to run? We currently have a gravity-fed system with a water boiler in the garage and a vented cylinder in a cupboard on the landing. I've read that an unvented system wouldn't be good due to the low water pressure - shall I just stick with what I've got and invest in a couple of pumps?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

2 bar not great, but better than some, waterboard have to supply at min .7 of a bar, with low pressure an unvented cylinder is not a good option nor is a combi boiler, this leaves you with tanks and vented cylinder,a whole house pump would be your best option.

It's probably worth considering expansion vessel tanks as well if you didn't want the pump running every time you use the water.

Water pressure and flow rate are different things. You can have 2 bar static pressure but a good flow rate i.e. the volume of water delivered at the taps is fine. Conversely a static 3 bar might deliver a lower flow rate than yours. A weir gauge is used to measure the flow rate. If you determine that you have a good flow rate either a combi boiler or an unvented tank will deliver good volumes of hot water. If your flow rate is poor your existing tank fed system with the addition of a whole house pump to supply taps and showers is the best answer and is considerably cheaper than the combi or unvented tank.
