Damp Proofing

Damp proofing porch area

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM

1. Which damp proof liquid / paint is recommended for a porch concrete floor? I would like to tile it afterwards, so need to know if I need a primer of any sort. Recommendations appreciated. 2. Is it ok if the tile level is below the DPM in the brick wall or should it be above?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Here’s a trade secret or should I say hardly anyone knows this ! SBR , is a cheap rubber compound that when mixed with neat cement powder , becomes an amazing waterproof coating that can be exposed to water indefinitely without decay. The DPM level is critical to keeping damp out because below the DPM is foundation and it’s always wet . You don’t have to raise the floor to meet that level , it can be done by waterproofing the section of wall below the DPM so it is in isolation to the floor .

Hi, I am unsure about tiling primer however as long as your external ground level is below the DPC then there will not be any internal penetration providing the DPC is working correctly. You want the internal floor level below the damp course other wise you will create a bridge that may make your walls wet by drawing moisture up the wall. If your concerned about moisture in the floor you could tank the floor completing with a screed which you could tile straight onto and everything would be nice and dry.

Hi Sika rapid dpm is a reputable brand It’s rolled directly onto the concrete takes 2 -3 coats Follow the directions on the back As for the DPC in the brick that usually depends on external ground levels you Can lap the DPM up the wall to the dpc and either have a tile up stand or cover it with skirting

Hi,all interior floor levels need to be above the brickwork DPC,(approx 150mm).If the porch was was built by a reputable builder there will be a DPM laid in the floor to stop any rising damp.
