Do you advise to remove gutters when repainting Soffits and Fascias?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM
Hi. I live in a 1930s mid-terraced house and am currently getting quotes to strip and re-paint the soffits and fascias. Some tradesmen are saying that they need to remove the gutters, others are saying they will paint around them and leave them up. What is best?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Removing the gutter will make for a much better job of the decoration, and it won't cost to much to replace the gutter with new either.

Depends on the type of guttering. A lot are still metal & cannot be taken down. Her you just have to do what you can. If it's NEW plastic then it should be OK but older ones may have deteriorated to the point of breaking. It's not always cost effective either as you need an experienced person to dismantle it all & that costs. As a painter, I would never recommend taking them down as what is behind is usually under the slate or tile & is pretty well protected. I have never had & would never ask to have any guttering taken down to complete work of this nature.

Leave well alone as you may be opening a can of worms . If you try to remove old guttering they could be rotten wood and refixing new would be a lot of hassle ,normally if the gutter is not leaking and doing its job I can't see any advantage in replacing it as long as the surfaces are prepared properly , once repainted they will look as good as new and it would be a lot cheaper for you as well

I would leave well alone if nice old cast iron guttering. You will get quotes from certain builders who would happily replace with cheap plastic selling on your old cast iron and making a serious buck in the process of doing so. Work around it and it will last another 80 years.

No need to remove gutters unless they are past there best
Not cost effective to remove if they are good condition
Overhang from flashing should protect the back of fascia
