Painting onto MGO Boards
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM
Hi, What would you recommend for painting onto MGO boards that are external. Painting is for decoration only but obviously want it to withstand elements and have a good bond to boards.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there ,
I would recommend to use a satin wood paint on the MGO , MGO is a specialised boarding, magnesium based , there are also a lot of specialised online paints available , always use a primer !

MGO Magnesium Oxide (MgO) boards are breathable and a characteristic of this property is a
high suction. Prior to painting, plastering or tiling, the boards should be coated on receiving faces and edges with an acrylic based primer - applied in line with the manufacturers guidance for use. Priming the board will improve the adhesion of finishing coats. The Mgo boards should always be primed and suitably finished with a weather protective top coat when used in semi-exposed external locations. The primer you will use should have been extensively tested by the manufacturers to prove compatibility with a range of MgO boards.

I agree that it's all about applying the right primer and external coats.

Hi there.
You can use any weathershield exterior paint depending on the finish you like. If you want something more adhesive use Bulls Eye primer made by Zinsser than you can apply anything after that.
