Old spare Fused spur or new junction box to supply new lighting circuit

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM

I've had an old boiler removed from cloakroom and new one installed elsewhere. The old boiler supply was from fused spur that goes back to a 5A mcb on the consumer unit. The old boiler was sole user on that circuit. I think the FSU had a 5A fuse in it, possibly 3A. I want to install a new light circuit in the cloakroom, can I simply connect to the FSU with a 5A fuse or could I remove the FSU and use a junction box (wagoo box with wagoo clips) to connect the supply cable from the consumer unit with the new lighting wiring.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes, If the fused spur unit has with a 3amp fuse that could be wired to operate a light. You will have to use a switched fused spur. The cable coming from fuse box must be 2.5mm because it was connected to a boiler. To do the lights you can reduce the cable to 1.5mm or 1mm depending on how many lights you want to use. I hope this will help.

In theory yes the fused connection unit with a 3amp fuse could be wired to operate a light. Obviously the best route would be to employ the services of a qualified electrician who would be able to test the circuit and install the appropriate cabling to conform to the current regulations etc

Hi, If the circuit goes directly to consumer unit ,and the switch fuse spur is the only load on a 5 amp ,then: Yes , take switch spur off , replace with a switch, and extend to to light position. Might want to check if u have rcd protection?

Wouldn’t recommend this would recommend wiring it into lighting circuit to rewiring the circuit these would be safest methods
