Damp Proofing

Renovating an air raid shelter

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM

I have an air-raid shelter in the garden (not as cool as it sounds), which is half buried into the ground. It is damp and clearly has water running into it from the ground above. The roof structure also looks a bit dodgy with some soil falling into from above. I want to make it into a workable space which would involve possibly getting the roof repaired, damp proofing it, painting it, putting in some flooring etc. My questions: What is the best way to dampproof an outside building like this? Can it be done with some sealant paint or will it need something more than this ? Also, who would I need to approach - a builder, a damp specialist, a landscape gardener? I was just interested if anyone e else has done similar work or had similar work done. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

We have converted 2 to date and unfortunately concrete bunkers are extremely difficult to damp proof but it can be done and the cost is greatly increased with the depth of the bunker.Obviously I don’t give to much information as so called trades steal my advise,I spend a great time investigating issues and have qualifications in adverse damp proofing systems. It can be done and easy when you know how.In short Holes to be dug, damp proof & concrete, render, soakaway. Good luck.

The best system would be a product called platton/ isola/tefond and possible a sump drain with a back up battery system

Your description of the actual structure material is not sufficient to give an exact specification for repair but if you have any way of draining incoming water , a cavity membrane drainage system would cover all eventualities as far as water or damp is concerned though soil entry from the roof must be plugged to prevent it blocking the drainage.

hi the best advise for you is to contact Alex Lynn at Koster aquatecnics, Dumfries. We would be able to waterproof from the inside if its not possible to excavate around the building which could be costly and messy, they also provide Themoplastic roofing material. All work using their materials will have to be installed by a registered installer. I fixed a badly leaking garage which was half built in the ground six months ago using Koster materials work a treat.
