Chimney breasts have been removed - can they be put back?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.26 PM

I have just put an offer in on a Warner flat. It has had all of its original features removed which is annoying, so I am looking at restoring them. The chimney breasts have been completely removed, and I was wondering if that's something that's relatively easy to put back in. I don't need it to be functioning necessarily, but I want to put back an original fireplace. Is this easy/feasible? Thank you!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Good evening. As in the previous response, you can certainly build a fireplace for aesthetics; however, as the property is a flat, it is very unlikely that you would be able to insert a flue and run a traditional fire. As with all things, much of your decision will be down to budget :-) You could elect to have a face brick fireplace - provided there were no structural implications involved with the flats below - but the most straight forward would be a timber frame covered in plasterboard and skim to match with existing decor. You could then fit a slate or stone hearth and place an Adams fire basket or cast iron fire surround to suit - whichever is your preference. And, of course, you can attach a mantle or a full fire surround to complete the look. Hope all goes well with the purchase - and that you get something you are entirely happy with. Regards
