Block paving for driveway
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.39 PM
I read that the normal base for blocks are 50mm of hardcore, 50 mm of sand then the blocks. Should I increase the hardcore and decrease the amount of sand to give a more stable foundation for the weight of vehicles ? What id the minimum amount of sand I can get away with /

Idon't understand why you would want to use membrane with 150mm type 1 and 25mm to 40mm sand plus at least 50 mm block. How would weeds come through that. I use membrane if base is wet and clay as it stops water coming through and at same time let's it away but never in normal conditions. If necessary i would use more than 150mm type 1 as this is simply the minimum ammount. Conditions decide. Some contractors add membrane to their quotes simply to make it sound better than some who don't.Don't forget however that ground preparation is the main item.Get it right.

Dig out the existing driveway then cover in membrane to stop weeds coming up through the blocks lay 75ml of type 1 (mot) then compact then repeat again add 20ml of sand compact then add 25ml of sharp to screed to get correct level begin to lay blocks when completed brush in kiln dried sand then compact with wacker plate

Hi. If you do it as substructure has suggested you will have a job well done that will last for years. If you use 50mm of hardcore you will have to re-do the drive in months!!
