Can anyone help me with mist coat on new plaster?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.25 PM

Having recently Failed my last attempt at painting new plaster, I need to get it right this time! Long story short, didn’t water down a contract matt and it didn’t adhere to the plaster and had a nightmare. So getting it right this time is a must but I am struggling with a few options: Water down an ordinary Matt emulsion, water down a contract Matt emulsion or use a pre made emulsion! My plasterer suggested using the wickes paint for new plaster how ever the reviews aren’t up to much, however the Screwfix one are, anyone had experience with these? I am certain I am going to add water regardless if people do just paint it on. Or should I just get any old emulsion and water it down as per instruction on tin or do I need a contract Matt? Plaster in one room over 2 weeks dry and plaster in another is a week when I get round to painting? Am currently looking at a trade Matt emulsion from Johnson’s or the Leyland trade contract emulsion as they are on offer atm and will obviously water it down per instruction. Or should I pay more for something like Leyland super leytex, Dulux supermatt or crown covermatt and water those down? Any recommendations advice would be greatly appreciated thanks! Edit 1: that’s exactly what I’ll do then, it’s what I used in the first place just didn’t water it down! Read my last question for more details on my nightmare mistake! Thanks all!

Hi. The screwfix one is good. Follow the instructions as regards how to dilute. Same with super latex. The best paint i have used on new plaster is mcpherson eclipse mainly because of the level of obliteration it provides. I water that down around 30%water. Few things to note about painting new plaster. 1. The mist coat does not 'seal' the plaster as many here and elswhere say. It will reduce the porosity but not by much. Back in the day it was called a miss coat because it really didnt do anything other than initially prime. 2 cured and dried plaster has a film of dust on its surface. You can when mist coating hope that when rolling the wall this dust is picked up with the paint. Or....again an old school method would be to wipe the surface down with a damp cloth or sponge to remove the dust before you paint. Its this dust that really causes the coating to fail

Would always recommend Screwfix's Plaster paint. This works a lot better than the water downed emulsions, purely because the consistency is a lot better and reduces spraying everywhere when rolling. Also claims to allow the plaster to "Breath" better but not sure how true that is As others have stated, its very important to wipe plaster down with sponge or cloth before painting Good Luck with your project

Hi, we have always used the MacPhersons Eclipse but water down as per instruction on the tub and you will not go wrong. You can get it from the crown decorator center or a brewers decorators merchants or online. I hope that helps. Regards Ian.

I recommend using the dulux paint myself I have never had a single issue using it, Always water down the paint correctly before applying on plaster. Mainly it’s a 70/30 ratio of paint to water
