Paying for job before they start
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.51 PM
When you pick a person to do the job how much do you need to pay them as I had a painter paid him for all paint wallpaper and other things he needed it came to a quarter of what he was charging for job and never seen him again so don’t trust giving more money to someone I don’t know any suggestions what to do thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I cannot stress enough how important it is to get quotes, talk to the potential tradesmen and get a feel for what they think and then bounce those thoughts of your next potential candidate.
As for the costs, I would expect to be paid on completion, unless it was a large job that may require a deposit or staged payments.
A word of advice, be wary of paying per day, I prefer fixed price, safer for the client and the contractor. Complex jobs agree in writing the terms!
Hope that helped

In regards to the person that took your money then you will need to seek legal advice.
In terms of now getting the work done, anyone you invite to quote make it clear that the terms are that they will self-finance the whole job. And full payment will be given on satisfied completion.
These terms should present no objections from a bonafide tradesman

It’s usually around 25%, but be careful with tradesman who don’t have reviews or weren’t recommended to you.
Our customers pay for the materials needed and have them delivered to them and pay labour after the work is done.

Usually I ask for between 25-50% deposit for materials and I ask for this payment via bank transfer so it’s like a safety net for the client you should never give cash deposits too as there no real trace of transferring funds to one person to another I don’t expect them to pay the deposit till after materials are delivered to site as well.
that way they know there not being robbed if it’s a very large job this becomes tricky but it’s all down to trust and gut instincts not every small even medium size companies if there having a tough year has got £20,000 for materials if you have a very large project a good level of trust and communication needs to be established before giving any company the contract for the works I suggest as if you can’t trust a company you shouldn’t have them do the work etc a business can get “accounts” with suppliers but this is extremely risky for non Ltd companies as if you don’t pay the bill they essentially are going to go bankrupt most non ltd companies aren’t going to take that risk myself included.

Don't pay anything up front
All payments should be pre agreed before appointing a contractor
It's reasonable to ask for payment to cover materiAls once delivered to site
Alternatively you pay direct for materials

It all depends on the Job, if its is a big job sometimes a deposit is asked for just to cover materials and this should always be discussed prior to starting the job.
Also it could be that you agree to make stage payments throughout the job again this should all of been discussed before starting. I would be very dubious of any tradesman asking for all the money up front and would strongly advising against it

on bigger jobs we ask for a one third deposit,a third half way through job, and balance on completion ,both client and contractor must have a level of trust between them.

Personally , if it’s a big job yes the builder should take a deposit and work with the client to keep payments up but make sure the work is done to suit the payments being made .
