Spot light fitting

Anonymous user 20 August 2019 - 10.28 AM

Hi I am interested in spot lights in my living room but the upstairs is a very crowded room. In order to fit spot lights do you need to pull up the carpet in the bedroom above to do all the wiring?

You basically have 2 options 1. Lift carpet and floorboards 2. Cut a channel in the ceiling to access joists for drilling then plastering

Yes the floor above needs to come up, otherwise the ceiling will need holes in it and so require plaster repair work, followed by redecoration.

Ideally yes. Or do it all from below, make a heck of a mess a lot of making good etc etc.

Building regs prohibit the notching of the underside of a joist so you need to be very careful how you run your cables from below...

Usually it is a lot easier to do it this way, however it is not always very practical for the homeowner to do. I’d say 70% of my spotlight installation are done from below, due to flooring upstairs not being removed and causing distress. Doing it from below is a bit more challenging and will require doing more holes which need patching up/re-plastering. It is do-able and on occasions easier, it all depends on the house.
