Bricklaying & Repointing

Supporting piers in long block walls

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

I am looking to build a farming equipment store of 60x24 feet, 12feet high along one length, falling to 7feet high at the back. The 12feet high side will be open with piers to form 4x15foot bays. If I use 100mm blocks, how far apart should I place piers in the rear and side walls? Can I use 140mm blocks and not bother with piers?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The size of building you are proposing is beyond the scope of Building Regulations Approved Document A, which provide guidance and rules on various of masonry construction which you can follow and build masonry structures without a specialist design. For your proposed building you will need to get an engineer involved to design your building. As a first thought you couldn't build a wall of 12ft heigh without supports at intermediate height with 100 or 140mm blocks. For non residential building of this type Approved Document A specifies piers at 3m centres and then again for lot smaller buildings than what you have proposed. Approved Document A is freely available on internet I would recommend you to download and read through purely as a guidance to get some idea but please be aware the building of the size you are proposing isn't covered by the document.

Okay if weree look at the question in a logical manner,,the building is being used for heavy equipment thetefore if it were to get bumped by machinery how well would it stand up.a 4nch wall not very well. Therefore piers every 3metres is a time consuming job. Much better build the first 7tt height with 7kn bllockeaid flat IE :9 inch wide with ,90cm returns to front of building the remaining height can be finished in 4inch with piers. If room allows additional attached piers along the back wall. Hope this helps tez qualified to c&g advanced craft bricklaying
