How do I find wall beams in an 18th century cottage?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

I’m about to start renovating a beautiful 18th century cottage that I bought at auction recently. I’d like to reveal some of the beams in the walls. How do I find them?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Tracey, You can expect a beam directly above every opening, internal and external walls. In old cottages - id expect to see timber beams. Existing drawings would be very helpful if you have them. Most architects / builders would be able to determine where they are likely to be. If you don't have drawings then I suggest you have a survey done and then the structure will become far more apparent. Have you checked whether the building is listed? If so you'd need to check with the local council what you can and cant do. There may be listed items that may require certain care. Many Thanks, Simon Javens

Another but cheaper option is to purchase a stud locator. Should be relatively easy as cottage beams are larger then average house. Hope that helps

If you tap the surface with a hammer you will hear a solid noise this is where a beam should be and then approx every 0.350 there after or the width of a standard hammer.
