Hi, currently doing up a house that was owned by a total Bodger. The majority of the plug sockets and light switches have been done terribly some are held in by silicone and most have been badly plastered around so will need digging out. I want to change them to nice hardware and so I know they’re safe. My issue is.. the areas will need plastering around or at least filling/ patching when the old sockets are removed before new ones can be wired in. So do I need a plasterer first or an electrician? I’ve no idea who to get to do this so that I get a good finish. Same issue in kitchen with dodgy tiling around sockets. Thanks in advance
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Electrician first. You may not need a plasterer. A good decorator can make good defective socket plasterwork around sockets. Electrician first to access the condition of the sockets, you don't need a full inspection. They will advise work what is required. Then when they have finished a decorator can make good.
You should get an electrician in first to do an (EICR) Electrical installation condition report. This would ensure the safety of the installation and raise any problems that would need to be rectified before any other work goes ahead.
Thanks

CAP RENOVATIONS
Hi Amy
In my opinion I would definitely suggest having a Electrician attend the job first. Reasons being and most importantly safety. As you mentioned the previous occupant being a bit of scrupulous character by all accounts, it would be good practice to have your electrician check over the job and give you a professional opinion of any work that Shall need carrying out before the plaster comes in and performs the finishing trade. Hope this helps and all the best on your renovation.
Best regards
Ryan

Plasterer first but the real issue is safety. Prior to your chosen handyperson/plasterer making good the plaster around the switches/sockets, he or she should ensure that the socket or switch is safely isolated to avoid electric shock through accidental contact with tools or wet filler. In practice, I doubt many actually take this precaution. But they should.
You need an electrician first to fit the boxes into the wall correctly and make cables safe ready for plastering then once plastered the electrician will come back and connect everything back up for you
Electrician then Plaster, should give the electrics a good check over first book an EICR to get a realistic idea about the electrical condition of your property.
