Bathroom Fitting

Replacing a shower enclosure with shower over bath

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

We're in the process of buying a new house and would like to replace the current walk-in shower with a shower over bath. We'd like to keep the existing shower head and controls where they are, however these are on the external wall facing into the bathroom. However this means that the shower wouldnt be the end of the bath, it'd be actually to the left hand side near the top end. The shower spray would be directed towards the new shower screen rather than down the centre of the bath. We're trying to keep costs, disruption and time to a minimum as we'll have a newborn and toddler to contend with! Is this even possible please? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes this is definitely possible from what I can tell you would have to take down the wall (any boards or tiles) if concrete it would need chasing out, locate the existing pipe work within the wall and redirect or extend to the required spot and make final connections and of course make good the wall. Thanks

It depends on how big the existing shower is and how big the bath is that you intend to replace it with and whether you are intending to use the existing tiles. If you are re tiling then the quick answer is to just move the pipework to where it normally is at the end of the bath. It isn’t a big job to do this. If you are keeping the tiles then... If you are intending to use a 700mm wide bath then having a shower on the side might be ok but you may get water escaping on the open side of the glass screen, around the rubber on the bottom and over the top of the screen (depending on your height and the power of the shower). You might also find you cant stand quite far enough away from the shower to be comfortable. If you can fit in an 850mm wide shower bath then you would be fine having the shower on the side of the bath. You just have to be aware that if the kids want a bath then this type of bath uses more water.

The riser rail, to what the flexi shower head is fixed to needs to be at best centre of the bath directly above the bath taps, if shower head was directly opposite shower screen there would be water spray everywhere, screens are designed to catch and direct some of the surplus spray not the majority. It may be more upevil and cost, but if its worth doing it's got to be right, failing that, hand hold the original shower head of fit a mixer tap with a shower head combined when the new bath is fitted, kind regards

This is possible with minimal disruption and using existing shower add a longer shower hose and fix the shower head above the taps of the bath cut the bottom row of tiles the height of bath and fit bath find the hot and cold feeds under floor or nearest point bring in under bath to taps and connect waist
