Gaps between new ceiling plaster and old plastered walls

Hi, I've just had several ceilings re-plastered following a burst pipe. Some walls have been re-plastered, some not. Both new and old walls have quite a considerable gap in many places between the ceiling and the wall plaster (inside the attic you can see light coming up through holes -- the gaps are up to 12mm wide and vary in length - most are about 10- 15cm long. Along metres of walls. Builder (who did the walls, not the ceilings) says the decorator will fill it with caulk. Is that sensible? Will it be thermally efficient and will it last? Should we be doing something from above? In some places the new plaster is falling out of the ceiling along the edge already.

You are correct to be concerned. And that caulk will not adequately fill such gaps, not to any standard of a quality finish. Pure excuse from the builder to say 'leave it to the decorator' I would say the best solution going forwards would be to have coving fitred ( but not at your expense)

By Putting decorator chalk in the gap isn’t going to solve the issue of seeing light in the attic as the gap is to big and the decorator chalk will keep falling out, I’d advise the best thing now is to put coving up

Well hope the previous plaster paint well the ceiling with PVA and let to dry then plaster. And for the gap between the walls and ceiling is quite big ave to fill and tape then fill back after taping. Then sanding after you are ready to paint and less chance to crack. Hope is helps .

Bad job full stop but as last one said needs plastered properly and should be ok you just got a bad builder
