Soil pipe and can I exhaust my cutter

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

Hi, I am a newbie... so any help would be much appreciated. I want to buy a Laser Cutter and use it in my garage which is connected to the house, however, the exhaust fan is quite noisy and a bit smelly with the cutting fumes. So I don't want to fall out with my neighbours. I wanted to change the fan for a silent running fan and exhaust into my soil stack above any wastes from toilets /showers etc so the smell exhausts out the top of the stack which is above my eves... is this OK to do ? ...... and has anyone got any idea the sort of M3 /h fan size I would need to blow the exhaust up the pipe and out the stack, standard house... thanks in anticipation

You need to speak to the manufacturers I’d say and maybe even environmental health agency as what’s best for people’s health and the environment with regards to browning the gases into the soil pipe. Laser cutting gas from exhaust might not mix well with gases from your waste pipe I dunno I’m just thinking outside the box here it’s a good idea in theory but in practice it might be dangerous yourself/your neighbours or potentially the environment. I think this question needs answers from a mix of trades really plumber, gas engineer & electrician would be a good start and also answers from the above too it’s quite a complicated issue I think. What I’ve said is just my opinion not facts as this really isn’t nothing to do with my trade or expertise but I’d thought I’d add some input anyway. Hope you get this sorted or you get sent in the right direction Regards Frankie

you will need to extract this unit properly ,you get humid air in a soil stack witch can lead to condensation this in turn could have an effect on the gasses from your laser cutter, and you may get moisture returning down the pipe from the cutter.

You can't put an exhaust of any kind into a used soil stack. If you can find out from the manufacturer what the ft3 p/h output of the exhaust is you could then install a carbon extractor (Rhino filters are good for this) with a ft3 p/h at least 10% greater than the cutter this should eliminate any smell going to outside.
