Uneven ceiling plaster boards

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

We have builders that were meant to be replacing the kitchen ceiling as part of their scope of works. They have put new plasterboard up ready for their plasterer next week. It has some gaps as much as 1cm wise between boards, bits cut out for pipework that have not been filled in around the pipe and does not sit level and flat. They also haven’t taken down the wall mounted cupboards meaning the plasterboard isn’t secured into the corners and drops down at those edges. The builders assure us this is ‘all good’ and will be sorted when the plasterer comes in but we are not convinced we won’t end up with an uneven ceiling. I would be grateful for opinions.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It doesn't sound all good to me. There shouldn't be any gaps between the boards. Sounds like pure laziness. The wall cupboards should definitely be removed so the boards can be fitted correctly and so the plasterer can access the ceiling to skim it. These issues definitely need to be addressed before the ceiling is plastered.

Hi Lisa, The gaps sound a liitle on teh big side by all seams will be covered by scrim joint reinforcing tape which will be sound enough. As for the unsupported section, I am assuming they are relying on the strength of the plaster coating to prevent it flexing. This 'may' work okay but is poor workmanship and isn't recommended. They should have put some screws into the corner of the ceiling to stop the weight of the plaster pulling down the Plasterboard the small gaps between the joints are fine as they will get Bonded out. Then a finish Coat is a final coat. Make sure that they don’t Polish the finish as it makes it hard for the paint to stay on the plaster, you don’t want it smooth as a baby’s bum just flat without ripples!!!

If it was me I’d lower the ceiling the minimum so it’s level and flat , the wall units should be taken out and walls boarded properly , also as last plasterer said do not polish the ceilings like a mirror

hi, if it was my project I would have taken down any wall units so to renew plasterboard, and no need for large gaps 10mm is not good although the plaster and scrim tape will fill the gaps ,hopefully the plasterer will take units down so he can get a good finish with his trowel
