Can anyone recommend a good brand of split-face slate effect tiles to use for a feature wall?

Hi All, As per the original question, can anyone recommend a good brand of split-face slate effect tiles for use on a feature wall? I would like to use these tiles but have seen very mixed reviews on sites such as Topps tiles. The most common complaint seems to be massive gaps between the tiles. Has anyone. who has experience with this type of tiling, found a particular brand that is easier to work with than the others or does it basically just come down to patience as there is little difference between them? Setting them up on the floor as a dry run and trying different combinations beforehand generally seems to be the recommended way to get the tiles to fit together. Are the people giving the bad reviews just grabbing whatever tile comes to hand and trying to make it fit or are some brands genuinely not very good? I am from Northern Ireland so would ideally like something local but am prepared to ship tiles from mainland UK if they are thought to be better than anything I can acquire from closer to home. Many Thanks Stuart

Hi to answer your question split face slate can be quite a difficult tile to use if you don't have experience in using slate products as it is a natural material and not rectified so you have to play about with it to get it to work. Also its best to seal tiles first as they are extremely porous before using them and then seal again once fitted. What I do with split face is spread the back of tile and wall to ensure I get a good bond and get them to fit the best I can and if I end up with a bit of a gap on some of them I use grout to blend it in so its not noticeable to the eye then I give it all a really good coat of sealant and use an enhancer to bring detail of tiles out but if you do that you need to do it before you seal them. Company's you can try is Tilegiant , porcelanoser, walls and floors . Best adhesive to use as well is keraflex maxi s1 grey and ultracolor grout . Hope this helps you with question and project. As we are trained tilers and stone masons we don’t recommend going to tile shops for advice ,which can be confusing for customers because you’re getting advice from a sales background. We use mostly Clad FX as it’s been around for years and supplied by the best stone suppliers in the uk . Rockford stone ,Artisans of devizes,Mandarin stone are the main trade dealers.

All the above is correct.... But l don't recommend u use grout at all..... Unless u have a lots of experience. Otherwise u can leave a grout stain over the slate... Split face tile are made to look rustic.. So sometimes u got a gap between then.. l agree.... But that's her nature style. I don't recommend grout at all.
