Carpeting stairs on rental property

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

We have just moved into a rental property. The stairs up to the first floor are quite steep. It looks like it used to be carpeted (I can see plenty of nails under the lip of each step and the steps itself are heavily marked but painted over. The steps are quite smooth and since we have two toddlers, just want to do what we can to make them less slippery and something to cushion a potential fall. I was hoping for some ideas on whether it is possible to carpet that one flight of stairs (we're rubbish at DIY so will definitely get someone in to do it) in a manner that will allow us to restore it somewhat when handing the property back to the landlord.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would Carpet the treads having had a pad for each step edge bound. You can fix these with a few staples leaving very few holes when moving out

Agreed carpet them, holes won’t be noticeable if you use underlay and gripper which will give more insulation and comfort, would think your landlord would be quite happy with you paying for this as it’s to his benefit improving the appearance of the priperty

I would Carpet the full stairs tread and the riser would be a lot neater and safer

Stairs are a prime area for potential accidents. Poorly fitted carpet, or steps fitted with step pads only create a possible trip hazard- especially if you have young children. If you want to carpet it to lessen noise and soften the steps there is really no shortcut. The budget solution would be to have a felt backed carpet fitted full width. This can be fixed to the back of each step with spray adhesive and tacks pins or staples. These can usually be removed with relative ease should you move. However most landlords will opt to keep the carpet if it is a good condition and a neat installation.
