Plumbing

No/very little hot water

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi all, Just looking for advice on what the problem (or problems!) could be before I get in an expert in to fix it, so I know what to ask! We've just bought the place and moved in a few weeks ago. The boiler we have is getting on a bit (a Potterton Suprima), and is paired with a Santon Premier unvented cylinder. Both are c.2002, when the property was built. We also have a Honeywell timer (a C27?) for the boiler, not sure if that’s original or came later. We've not really had any problem with the hot water until last night, when my partners Dad noticed there was no hot water in the downstairs bathroom (either from the tap or the shower). We haven’t used it before, so weren’t sure if it never had hot water. We seemed to be getting hot water elsewhere in the house so thought it was an isolated issue with that bathroom. This morning though, we noticed that we weren’t getting any hot water from the showers or kitchen tap, and only lukewarm water from the bathroom taps. I checked the boiler and noticed the light was a solid amber, which I believe means the mains is on but there is no external call for heat. However, the hot water light was lit on the Honeywell timer, which had come on automatically that morning. I switched the timer off and used the boost function, but the boiler didn’t change from continuous amber to flashing/solid green (which I’m led to believe is meant to happen). In the mean time, I’ve switched on the immersion heater on the Santon. However, even after being on for a couple of hours, I still can’t get any hot water out of the showers or kitchen tap, though we do get hot water out of the bathroom taps (though not checked in the downstairs bathroom that had the initial issue yet). All feels a little odd? Is the issue with the timer or the wiring to the boiler? Or has the boiler packed in? And not sure why some outlets are getting hot water and some are not, even when the immersion heater is on? Any advice would be greatly received! Thanks!

There could be a string of problems , fault with hot water demand controls , immersion heater could be the thermostat , & you could have a build of scale in the hot water draw off , or it could be a simple air lock.

From your description, I would first check the programer is set correctly and then whether they is power at the cylinder thermostat, verify it functioning and set to the correct temperature. If the programmer and cylinder stat is set correctly and both functioning it may be a zoning valve. these can be manually opened until a repair has been carried out. I would doubt that it has been caused by any airlocks as unvented systems run at constant pressure and would push any air out.

My knowledge does not come for free as I spent thousands on getting my knowledge and why should I give that knowledge away for free. That's like asking me to work for free which I bet that is something you never do.
