Dripping sound in ceiling (below roof) in windy weather but no sign of a leak!

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

Anytime we have windy weather, you can hear a dripping/chimey sound coming from the upstairs bedroom ceiling. We have checked for leaks and found nothing. And please note this only happens when it's windy and it is nothing to do with rain. We have tried to be in the loft when the sound happens and you can't seem to hear it from the loft, you can only hear it from the bedroom ceiling. Any suggestions would be great! So this only happens when it's windy, there's no rain when this occurs. I've been into the loft and you can hear the sound through the actual roof. It's nothing to do with the chimney which is in fact artificial. Is there any reason for the tiles or any other part of the roof to cause such a sound in the wind? It even happens in summer when it's been dry for ages if there's a windy day. The chimney is artificial only. The sound comes directly from the roof, you can hear it coming from the roof when in the loft. It must be something either to do with the tiles or other stuff on the roof...

Check for the lap coverage around the lead cover flashings, if this is on the short side with directional winds water can ingress into property

If the chimney is not in use is it capped off via slate and a flaunch or a chimney cowl, it could be that if it's not then the high wind could be blowing down the chimney and blowing loose debris down onto a plate (if installed). I have also seen it were train comes down the chimney and hits the plate above log burners etc causing the dripping sound but showing no signs. I'd suggest if the chimney is no longer used then have it capped off properly and install a air brick or two, that way no rain or wind can get down but at the same time the chimney is getting plenty of ventilation Hope that helps

Check for old aerial leads or wires also water tank overflow pipes that could flap in wind but will send vibration onto plasterboard
