Extractor fan has no earth, but cable to it is twin and earth

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

About to install a new extractor fan which is double insulated. The feed for the electirics comes from the shower switch (fused and external to the bathroom) to connect the extractor, is it just a case of putting a block connector on the earth cable to isolate it and just use the L/N cables for the extractor fan? thanks in advance! To be clear. I am not doing the work. That is what is left over. And the old extractor was connected to the cable that is in situ. Do I need a different extractor fan or rewire?

You should not be doing it. It is a notifiable job under part p. As homeowner you face a fine of upto £5000 and potentially kill someone. You CANNOT come from the shower feed. The questions you are asking show that you are not competent to do this work. I mean no disrespect but get a registered electrician in Let your electrician advise

If you are replacing an existing extractor fan and the new one is Double Insulated then no there isn't going to be Earth point and connector block the T & E is the right way to terminate. But like the above Electrician pointed out Electrical work should only be undertaken by a qualified and competent person, if? it is fed from your shower circuit it is totally unsuitable and dangerous, but I expect you will find it's probably a isolator switch for the fan and it is on the lighting circuit, if in doubt get it checked out.

The fan will mostly likely be fed from the lighting circuit via a spur or triple pole isolator. I've heard people wrongly claim their fan runs off the shower many times. Most fans are double insulated so don't require a c.p.c (earth) to be connected to them. Always get a qualified electrician to carry out electrical work. Thanks.

I agree with the previous answer. The earth should be terminated separately in a connector block but this is not just to get the earth out of the way ... The terminated earth can be tested as part of any inspection. This allows us to prove that the supply cable is still earth protected.

Agree with the other answers, but my advise is leave it to a professional to do.
