Edited: Thank you for the answers so far! How many man hours EXCLUDING the trim and architraves?
We’re having an extension built and are remodelling the rest of the house so we will be in a situation where we will have to decorate (or pay someone to decorate) the whole house.
I think we could do this ourselves as money will be tight at this stage, but my husband disagrees (as he thinks we won’t have enough time to do it).
How long would it roughly take (in working hours) to decorate 4 double bedrooms, a large lounge, kitchen and dining room, hallway, small playroom, a walk in closet and a small office, laundry and downstairs loo. Everything will be empty, flooring will not be laid yet and finish will be new plaster, this includes ceilings. Possibly skirting and architraves.
I’m aware of drying times and planning on 2 coats after mist coat of white only everywhere at this stage. Any ideas please?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
You would probably be looking at a good 2weeks work... New work requires a mist coat on all ceilings / walls.... Then a light sanding before applying another 2/3 coats. All new woodwork would require knotting... 2 coats of primer/ undercoat... Final coat of gloss or satinwood.... Obviously around all architraves and skirting board would need caulking and filling before painting... Good luck...

P.S. Having seen others advice I will like to say that PVA on new plaster is a big No-No.

Hi there, firstly two mist coats of white emulsion will not give you a solid looking finish on plaster. I would suggest that your first coat to the plaster work should be one coat of PVA, you would thin the pva at a ratio of 5 water to 1PVA. Then apply 1 mist coat emulsion, finish with 1more coat emulsion thinned about 10%. Your skirting and architraves should be 1undercoat/ 1 coat gloss. Times on hours for unprofessional painters 240 hours, difficult to say , unless I see the job. Hope this helps.
Make sure plaster is Dry,make sure all plaster is a uniform pink. I know you will know but have to say just in case.
I paint new builds often so know what should be done.
We give new plaster a light even sand which helps the paint bond, then we mist coat using A water based contract white emulsion diluted with 40% water.
Apply 1 (or 2 if not completely covered) mist coats and 2 top coats, leaving 24 hrs between coats
-New plaster is very porous. If you apply any undiluted paint directly on, any moisture will immediately be sucked out of that paint before it has a chance to dry naturally.
-Contract paint will also allow the plaster beneath it to breathe, avoiding trapping any moisture that could cause damp patches and other issues down the line.
-DONT use PVA, PVA is essentially a waterproof sealer, it will prevent the paint from soaking into the plaster.
Timescales - not having seen the size of rooms or what work is needed I can only guess at 200+hrs (that's a lot of evenings and weekends).
Message me for advise, hints and tips to save money and speed up the process.

Other tradesmen have obviously been doing their trades prior to the decorators. I would firstly dust down all ceilings and walls with a soft sweeping brush, and then Hoover up to tops of architraves, skirtings and clean out the rest of the rooms prior to painting. Apply 1no mist coat to all ceilings and walls. Thinned down 40/60 and when thoroughly dry, apply 2no coats to give a solid finish. Woodwork. All gaps to woodwork to be chalked, and when dry, all woodwork to be rubbed down.dusted.and hoovered prior to painting. K.p.s all woodwork, rub down any filler dust off and spot prime.apply finish of 2no coats of satin wood or 1coat of gloss to finish. Approx 2 wks work. Hope this is helpful. Mal Jones Decorators.
